The coffee
Flat whites, long blacks, short blacks and frappes, brewed on Vice Espresso from Canterbury. Soy, oat and almond on the wand, syrups if you want them, extra shots if you need them.
Now showing on Stafford Street
The Grindhouse Cafe is where Timaru comes for seriously good coffee: flat whites, long blacks and frappes brewed by a genuine coffee obsessive, in a room papered with cult movie posters. Relax and unwind from the daily grind.

333 Stafford Street, under the film reel.

Now pouring
Flat whites, long blacks, short blacks and frappes, brewed on Vice Espresso from Canterbury. Soy, oat and almond on the wand, syrups if you want them, extra shots if you need them.
Fresh from the oven
Muffins, crepes, scones and slices baked fresh, plus a small cabinet of savouries and hot soup when the weather calls for it. A tight selection done well, because the coffee is the star.
The setting
Cult movie posters floor to ceiling, film reels on the walls, cinema cushions on the couch. Grab a window seat, a footpath table, or sink into the sofa under Predator.

The story
As one longtime regular tells it, Chris was the first professional barista in Timaru. Before him, the best coffee in town came out of a tin. The Grindhouse is the specialised coffee outlet he built for the town he converted, one flat white at a time.
The name works twice: the coffee grind, and the grindhouse cinema. So the walls wear Predator, Blacula and Invasion of the Saucer-Men, the shelves carry film reels and vinyl, and the couch cushions say popcorn. Simple, no fuss, and entirely itself.

"If you're after a damn good cup of Joe, Grindhouse has got you. It's a simple, no fuss cafe that has a very small selection of cabinet food to go with your cuppa, but you're really there for the caffeine. Any which way you like it, the coffee is great. As the double entendre name suggests, there's Grindhouse movie posters on the walls, and seating outside. Definitely pop if you love a good coffee!"
"Possibly the best cafe in all the South Island and definitely the coolest! If you're a film buff looking for some great coffee this is the place for you!"
"Absolutely BEST coffee in Timaru! I've tried a lot, some come close but this is hands down #1. Highly recommend."
"Fantastic coffee from a real coffee nerd. Had a flat white and a short black, both were excellent."
